The 9-Player Lovers Deck — Roles and Rules
The Lovers don't occupy a deck slot. They are an option layered onto any lineup: after roles are dealt, two players are bound as a pair. The two know each other, share a Lovers-only night chat, and if both are alive when the game is decided, the Lovers alone win — whatever their original factions.
The quickest way in: the '9P Lovers Room'
The standard decks include one Lovers lineup.
| Role | Count | Faction |
|---|---|---|
| Villager | 2 | Village |
| Seer | 1 | Village |
| Medium | 1 | Village |
| Knight | 1 | Village |
| Hunter | 1 | Village |
| Madman | 1 | Werewolf |
| Werewolf | 2 | Werewolf |
9 players total (village 6 : werewolf faction 3) — with two Lovers layered on top. The pair takes no deck slot, so capacity stays 9.
Pick 'Choose Deck Preset' → '9P Lovers Room' in the room-creation settings, and 'Enable Lovers Role' switches on with it.
🔵 This deck carries both the Medium and the Hunter: executions get verified, and the executed keep one answering shot. The room the pair has to "just survive" in is offset by how much the village gets to know.
Layering it onto other decks
The Lovers stack onto any lineup: switch 'Enable Lovers Role' on in the room-creation settings — standard deck or custom, either works. After the deal, a random pair is bound.
⚠️ Picking a different deck afterwards leaves the toggle on (it doesn't switch itself off when you re-choose). To drop it, flip the same toggle off.
Which pair forms decides the game
The Lovers' charm is being layered on top of the base roles — the same option plays completely differently by draw.
- Village × village — the gentlest form. But "the village wins" is not their win: the goal is two survivors at the end, and late in the game the village's checkmate line and the pair's survival will collide.
- Across the factions (village × werewolf, say) — this option's showpiece. The wolf-side partner knows the pack's bite plans; the village-side partner steers the day's rope. Betray neither your camp nor your partner, all the way down — a tightrope with an audience.
And when one dies, the survivor returns to their original faction (no chain). Yesterday's "we two survive" ledger reopens today in faction units — the exact mirror of the Twins (who share their fate). A mechanism built around betrayal, where the Twins' is built around trust.
Sometimes, no pair forms
One constraint: two players whose hidden faction is the same, and isn't village, can't be paired (wolf with wolf, wolf with Madman, and so on). Village pairs and cross-faction pairs are all candidates.
∴ At almost every table this never matters — but in an extreme custom lineup with no legal pair at all, the game simply starts without Lovers (no error).
The player counts it wants
The pair needs room to blend in. In small rooms the two-way behavior shows through fast, so 7 players or more is the comfortable floor. The standard 9P Lovers Room clears it as-is; once you're used to the option, switching it on over the 7-Player Beginner Deck or the 13P Classic Room makes the same pair a completely different kind of tension.
One more interaction worth knowing: layered onto a custom lineup with the Princess, a live Lovers pair is not dragged down by the Princess's doom (they count as the Lovers faction while paired).
