FAQ
Before you start
What kind of game is this?
A werewolf (Mafia-style) social deduction game played over 3D voice chat. Werewolves are hiding among the players — find them through discussion and votes. The roles and win conditions follow the classic werewolf structure.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs right in the browser. PC and smartphone players join the same table.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Play in a PC browser or a smartphone (iOS/Android) browser at the same table. No need to line up devices.
How many players do I need?
Playable with 3 to 13 players. Presets (player counts with role lineups) cover 6 to 13; for fewer players, build a custom lineup by rearranging the roles.
Recommended counts are covered in Room sizes and how to create a room.
I've never played werewolf. Is that OK?
Absolutely. We recommend starting with a smaller preset. If a term loses you, check the Glossary.
Does it run on a Chromebook?
Yes. A Chromebook's Chrome browser runs MAFIA like any other PC browser — nothing to install.
Mic and camera
Is a microphone required?
The game assumes a microphone. You can still enter and vote without one, but you will not be able to speak on your turn, so we strongly recommend using a mic.
When the browser asks for permission, choose "Allow".
Do I need a voice app like Discord?
No. Once you enter a room you can talk right there over voice chat. Discussion goes one speaker at a time, and at night there are times when you talk only with specific players.
More on this in A Voice Chat Werewolf Game.
Is a camera required?
No. The camera never switches itself on — it shows you only after you press the button yourself (while you hold it, or until you press again once it locks on). You can play to the very end without showing your face.

Troubleshooting walks through what to check, in order.
During the game
Is lying allowed?
In a werewolf game, deception is legitimate play. Faking a role, covering for a teammate, and voting out an innocent player are all part of the game.
There's a player harassing people
Open their avatar menu inside the room and use Report. Only the operators read reports, and the reported player is never told who reported them.
Being lied to, voted out, or beaten is not reportable (as above — that's legitimate play). What is reportable: abusive language, harassment, discriminatory remarks, inappropriate display names — behavior that goes beyond the game.
How detection works, and why there is no block button, is covered in Troll Defense — Abuse and Smurf Detection.
Is there a block feature?
There is no personal block button that removes another player from your games. If "I don't like them, so they disappear" worked, a game built on lies and betrayal could not exist. Harassment is handled by the operators through the reports above.
MP (MAFIA Points)
Does it cost money to play?
Free to play. Every room charges entry and spectator fees in MP, the in-game points (at least 1 MP each), but you never need to pay money to win.
What is MP?
The in-game points. Used for things like entering tables.
