Seer Strategy — the Credibility Fight
The Seer's rules (the automatic first-night result, what results mean, death by divination) are collected in the role dictionary: Seer. This column is about when and how to spend that information.
The first-night 'Not' is footing — not proof
On night one, a result arrives automatically: "#N is NOT a Werewolf." In effect you start the game holding one confirmed 'Not' you did nothing to earn — and in the day-one debate, that one card is your only footing.
But — the Madman divines 'Not'. If your free 'Not' landed on the Madman, you have just handed the enemy a "confirmed innocent" signboard. The Fox also reads 'Not' (and the first-night result never causes the divination kill).
∴ When you publish a 'Not', say no more than "this player is not a Werewolf". Declare "this player is village" and, when it breaks, your own credibility goes down with it.
From night two: whom to check
Now you choose, so you need a policy. Two work reliably in practice:
- Check the strong speakers first. If a player steering the debate is a wolf, the damage is maximal. Pull a 'Werewolf' and the day is decided; even a 'Not' makes them the village's backbone.
- Leave the silent for later. Checking someone who carries no information barely moves the board.
The knack is choosing not "who looks suspicious" but "whose result changes the most when it lands".
In a room with a Fox, divination carries a second job: stepping on the Fox kills it. But the Seer is not the only Fox-removal tool — the vote works, and so does the Witch's poison (see the ways-to-die list in the Fox's role dictionary).
Claim, or stay hidden
The moment the Seer claims, the wolves come to bite — and the Knight can guard only one player a night, so a claim is also a request: "guard me".
- Claim on day one — the information reaches the village. But wolves will fake the same claim, and the village now has to judge which claimant is real.
- Stay hidden — you're harder to bite, but what you know reaches nobody. Get voted out while hidden, and the village fights on zero information.
While you're new, claim on day one. Hidden Seers drift into "days pass with no information" — the village's most painful way to lose.
When a counterclaim comes: real isn't won in a day
Claim, and at most tables a wolf claims Seer against you (Counterclaim (CC)). The genuine holder is called real, the impostor fake (Real / fake). From the village's seat, one of you is certainly fake — and now the Seer's real work begins.
- Stack results daily. The real one's strength: every night adds one true result. The fake has to keep inventing, and each day raises the odds their fiction collides with the actual board. The moment their results contradict — a Slip — call it on the spot.
- Welcome cross-checks on your 'Not's. A result you published can get confirmed by a second route (the scene below is exactly that). Verification is always the real one's friend and always the fake's enemy. ∴ The side that can say "please check me" is the side that looks real.
- Don't fight over your own execution order. "Don't vote me out" makes you look fake. What the real one says is: "clear the grey pool first — if I'm fake, my results will break down on their own." Remind the village that time is on your side.
A scene
A 7-player room (the beginner deck); your first-night 'Not' landed on #4.
On day one you claimed: "#4 is not a Werewolf." One of the wolves also claimed Seer — and threw a 'Werewolf' at #6.
The village wavered — until #4 spoke: "I'm a Twin; my partner is #5." Twins know each other, so #5 confirmed it on the spot. Your published 'Not' was verified by an independent route. The village believed the real Seer, and the fake was voted out.
That board came together because the free 'Not' happened to land on a Twin. Had it landed on the Madman, the same flow would have fooled the village. ∴ The 'Not' is footing. It is not proof.
