Creating a Room and Choosing Player Counts
Create your own room and you decide the player count, the roles, the timers, and the fees. Whoever creates the room becomes its Room Master (what that unlocks is in What the Room Master Can Do).
Room types
- Game rooms — where werewolf is played. This page is about these.
- Break rooms — voice-chat hangouts with no game running.
Player count comes from the role lineup
In a MAFIA game room you don't type in a player count. You pick a combination of roles — the deck — and its total becomes the room's capacity.
The creation screen offers deck presets by player count ('Choose Deck Preset'):
| Preset | Players |
|---|---|
| 6P Knight Room | 6 |
| 7P Beginner Room | 7 |
| 7P Fox Room | 7 |
| 9P Medium Room / 9P Hunter Room / 9P Lovers Room | 9 |
| 10P Witch Room | 10 |
| 13P Classic Room | 13 |
- For a first table, the 7P Beginner Room is the easiest lineup to run (the design behind it is explained in The 7-Player Beginner Deck — Roles and Rules).
- Pick 'Custom (Free Selection)' to build the lineup role by role — including sizes no preset covers, like a small table of 4 or 5.
- Turn-based werewolf game rooms hold 3 to 13 players (presets cover 6 to 13; go custom for anything smaller).
Games start when the room is full
A game room starts once every seat is filled. The game needs everyone in, so you can't "make it big and start halfway". Pick a size your group can actually fill.
Time settings
Each part of the day has a per-room timer ('Time Settings (Seconds)'):
| Setting | What it times | Default |
|---|---|---|
| 1st Round | The short day-one speeches | 60 s |
| 2nd Round+ | The main debate turns | 90 s |
| Free Talk | Everyone talking at once | 45 s |
| Night Action | Role actions at night | 40 s |
| Interrupt | The length of an interrupt turn | 20 s |
Longer for tables that love deep debate, shorter for tempo. There is also a setting to skip the day-one first round entirely.
Rule options
The main ones (each is also explained on the creation screen):
- 'First Day Bite' — enables werewolf attacks from night one (default off = planning night)
- 'Randomize Speaking Order' — reshuffles the day's speaking order daily (off = seat order)
- 'Shuffle seats at start' — rearranges the seating when the game begins
- 'Interrupt' — allows the once-per-day interrupt speech (→ Take Back the Debate with the Interrupt)
- 'Free Talk' — whether to hold the open discussion after the individual turns
- Display and safety options such as 'Role Badge', 'Abuse Detection', and 'Push-to-Video'
Making your own rules is the point of MAFIA (→ Make Your Own Rules and Play Your Way).
Entry and spectator fees (MP)
Every room charges MP (MAFIA Points) — an entry fee and a spectator fee, each at least 1 MP (free rooms can't be created). You also choose here whether spectators may bet on the outcome ('Allow Audience Betting').
When you create a room, you pay the same entry fee yourself (a held stake that counts as your entry fee for the first game). Unlike the players' entry fees, it is not refunded if the room disbands unused, so set the fee to match the group you can actually gather.
Payment and refund rules from the player's side are in Joining Rooms and Spectating. Note that after creation, the entry fee can only be lowered.
